"Spain's Costa Verde by Private Train" - June, 2017
The north of Spain is nature at its finest, combining a magnificent coastline with the majestic peaks of the Picos de Europa mountain range, and featuring green rolling hills dotted with small villages, seductive inlets and spectacular beaches, as well as fabulous food and a captivating way of life forged by ancient Celtic influences.
Our 17-day journey in June, 2017 will be limited to 28 persons and will take us from historic Santiago de Compostela in the west to the magnificent playground of San Sebastian and then on through the famous Rioja wine region to Madrid. Over eight of those days we will have the exclusive use of one of the world’s great trains, the five-star El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, featuring refurbished 1920s British Pullman wagons and only 14 deluxe suites all containing either a queen bed or twin beds, a lounge, large windows, and a private bathroom with a shower and hydro sauna. In other words, our own private luxury train!
Our train will travel only during daylight hours, allowing us to take in the scenery along the route and to sleep in quiet and comfort whilst parked at night. Four of the train’s lounge cars cater for a variety of interests, from dancing and live music, to reading or just taking in the spectacular views. Along the way we will pass through and explore medieval hamlets and historic towns, tracing the fertile tract between the Cantabrian Mountains and the scalloped beaches on the Bay of Biscay, visiting Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum and exploring the Basque country, as well as the pre-Romanesque gems of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, the remarkably preserved medieval village of Santillana del Mar and many charming seaside ports.
Before surrendering to the pleasures of the El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo we will stay in the historic parador in Santiago de Compostela, the city that is the final destination of the famous Camino de Santiago, and from this base savour the region's scenery, cuisine and fine wines.
After the end of our rail odyssey and having enjoyed the delights of San Sebastian we will make our way leisurely to Madrid by private bus, where our journey will end, but only after we explore the famous Rioja region, the heart of Spain’s wine industry.
